Within the past few days, there has been a stark increase of wealth in Obscura, rising from 20,000 when the town was first settled to over 120,000, a more than sixfold increase. This wealth creation has largely resulted from business expansion and a significant volume of exports. However, it has also opened a stark divide between the haves and the have-nots. One individual now holds more than a quarter of all wealth in Obscura, raising questions about expanding taxation to even the divide and ensure that wealth serves the social good. Others would rather encourage businesses to raise wages to the point where a seedling can support themselves and begin to get ahead. Aestorusian Industries has taken a major step in this direction, guaranteeing a minimum wage of 30 seedcoin per hour to all employees, ensuring they need not work around the clock just to make ends meet.

The town also faces a persistent unemployment and underemployment crisis. Fifteen seedlings currently hold no job of any kind, left to scavenge without the means to participate in society. The government's message to them is a simple one: take any job, get to work, and start thriving.

To combat inequality and scarcity, the government is creating two public businesses. The first will provide clean water to all seedlings, fully stamping out the consumption of murky water in our town. We at the Obscura Observer are delighted, having called for exactly this in our prior op-ed, proof that the Observer will always pressure the government toward the betterment of society. The second is a lumber farm to secure a consistent supply of lumber. So long as that lumber stays cheap and plentiful, it will be a fine development, and renewable practices will help Obscura thrive.

The government has also fully opened the real estate market following a major purchase of territory. The new land has been divided into plots that any citizen may buy for an average of 3,500 seedcoin, with the stated aim of funding future expansion. Positive as this is, it makes one wonder whether a wealthy individual might buy up every plot and rent them back at a premium. Only time will tell if that comes to fruition.
